Oh,
this is going to be such fun, said Mouse.
What is? asked Sister.
Remember those people who were here yesterday? Look what they left behind. Mouse held up an open bag of little candy hearts.
May I have one? asked Sister.
Not yet. I have big plans for these hearts.
Such as?
Im going to deliver them to all my friends in the neighborhood, said Mouse. This is going to make everyone very happy.
Mouse
called to Spider in her web. Yoo-hoo! Heres
a present for you.
Why, thank you, said Spider, taking the little yellow heart.
Read what it says, Spider.
Web site, read Spider. "Thats perfect! Spider fastened the yellow heart to her web. Thank you, Mouse. This makes me very happy.
Next, Mouse delivered a pink heart to Mrs. Elephant.
What does it say? asked Sister.
Dream girl, whispered Mouse. Mrs. Elephant has been having trouble sticking to her diet lately. Maybe this will make her feel better.
Mrs.
Elephant smiled when she saw the pink heart. Dream
girl! Why, I declare, I feel positively light-footed.
Mrs. Elephant did a little dance. Thank you, Mouse.
This makes me very happy.
Next, Mouse delivered a white heart to grumpy Mr. Warthog.
Smile, read Mr. Warthog. He did smile just a little bit between snorts. Thank you, Mouse, he said. This makes me very happy.
See,
Mouse said to Sister. I told you these hearts would
make everyone happy.
Not quite everyone, Sister said. Look.
Lion was making his way across the grass toward Mouse. He did not look at all happy.
Did you forget the king? asked Sister.
Uh-oh, said Mouse. I must have one for him here somewhere.
Then I suggest you find it very quickly, Sister whispered.
Lion stopped right in front of them. He let out a fierce roar. Whats this I hear about everybody but me getting a pretty little heart?
Oh, I havent forgotten you, Lion, Mouse said as he searched the bag for just the right heart. Lover Boy? Never! Smile? Not likely. Kiss me? Forget it. Im doomed, thought Mouse. But then he found itthe heart with just the right words.
Mouse
gave the little purple heart to Lion.
You rule, Lion read. He did not say thank you, but he looked happy.
Mouse handed the bag of hearts to Sister. Here, he said. Take the rest of these before I get myself in big trouble.
Why, thank you, said Sister. This makes me very happy.
