I am not sure of the answer, but the noise probably does not come from the stomach. I think it comes from the rather violent churning that goes on all the time in the long tube below your stomach, the intestine. I suspect that the noise is more noticeable when the intestine also contains bubbles of gas produced by the many harmless bacteria that live there.

I think you will hear noises from movements of the intestines almost any time you put your ear against someones tummy. Sometimes the noises are louder, and then you may say that your stomach is growling.
