Do rocks grow?
|
Do rocks grow? No, not in the sense that living things grow. Of course, when rocks were formed, or when they are being formed now, they are increasing in size. Think of a stalactite, which looks like a rock icicle hanging from the ceiling of a cave. It increases in size as ground water drips over it and leaves calcium carbonate behind, little by little. You might say that it grows, but you will see that is really increases in size only by adding more of itself to its outside. Living things do not grow that way. An animal takes in food and changes the food to make more animal. |
