Dry Valleys

Dear Friend,

I’m very excited today because I got to visit the Dry Valleys, one of the most remote and special places in the world. It is extremely dry and cold—in some places it hasn’t rained in two million years! It is a lot like Mars. I got to go because mummified seals are found here, some of them thousands of years old.

The wind often blows very hard and carves giant boulders into fantastic shapes, called ventifacts. Scientist Joseph Mastroianni took this picture of me when I was photographing a ventifact so thin that there is a hole in it!

Your friend,
Your friend, Bob
