Shackleton’s hut

Dear Friend,

Today I visited Shackleton’s hut! Sir Ernest Shackleton was an early explorer of Antarctica. During one trip, from 1914 to 1916, his ship, the Endurance, got stuck in sea ice for ten months. In one of the most famous rescues in history, Shackleton and five of his men journeyed 800 miles across the Weddell Sea (one of the world’s most dangerous patches of ocean) to bring help to the rest of his crew. Amazingly, everyone survived!

Today, Shackleton’s hut, built in 1908, is a historical monument. And because of the extreme cold and dryness, it hasn’t changed—there are even cans of food lying around and old pictures on the wall!

Your friend,
