How to Make It:

  1. Find a paper bag that fits on your head like a big hat. Roll up the opening until the bag is as high as you want your hat to be.

  2. To make a brim, trace around the opening in the bag onto cardboard. Draw a larger circle around this one. Cut out the doughnut shape. Tape the bag to the brim.

  3. Cover your work area. To make papier-mâché, mix 1 cup of flour with 1 1/4 cups of warm water.

  4. Rip old newspaper into small strips. One by one, dip the strips in the paste, remove the excess paste, and lay the strips on the hat. Cover the outside of the hat with two layers of strips.

  5. Add another layer, this time using old magazine pictures or strips of construction paper. If you plan to paint your hat, use white paper-towel strips.

  6. When the hat is completely dry, decorate it.
