    Lying Friend
In my school, soccer is a big fad. I play on a team. My friend doesn’t play soccer at all, but she pretends that she plays for a traveling team and that she is an expert at it. I want her to stop, but I don’t want to hurt her feelings. What should I do?

It’s hard to know what to think when you find out that a friend is lying. Perhaps she made up this story because she is insecure and wants people to like her.

Without getting angry or accusing your friend, you might want to talk to her alone and ask her if she is really on a team. As you talk, you can explain that she doesn’t need to be on a team for you to like her. Then listen patiently as she responds, and try to be understanding. Perhaps you will be even better friends after this conversation.

Your friend may really be interested in joining a soccer team, so you could help her by telling her how you got started. If she does want to play, you could practice with her and show her what you know.

Best wishes,
